I was there many a Saturday night for the Free Show. When we started to work on THE GREEN HEART, I thought to myself: I'm working with Rusty Magee; now I've hit The Big Time. Still feel that way.

Dear Alison:

My heart goes out to you and Nat. Rusty was such a soulful, courageous individual. I remember last seeing him at a run-thru for a musical revue Josie Abady was directing. He wrote a haunting song and was exceedingly modest about his own contributions but full of praise for his fellow writers. I'm so sorry his life was brief, but the love he gave and received was profound.

I cannot imagine my New York experience without Rusty. I hear his voice so clearly. I can see him at the piano--how many venues?--face scrunched up, fingers dancing. He was so generous. He even MC'd at my wedding reception. The guy would perform anywhere. Thank goodness. We needed him. We need him still. The world tonight is short many laughs and much love. God keep you, Rusty, and farewell.

I only ever knew Rusty from the days of the Free Midnight Comedy Show @ West Bank -- 20 years ago?? -- indeed I haven't seen him since then. I'm terribly sorry to hear about what's happened; take it as a sideways tribute to him that he made enough of an impact on me to write this message now. Rusty, so long; there are far too few smiles in the world these days.

I knew Rusty through my experience of attending numerous moonwork comedy nights and Mid-summer Nights Dream. Rusty was certainly a major reason for attending these shows -I knew at least one aspect of the evening would be incredible! I thank Lowell and Mason Pettit for introducing me to Rusty - I am a lucky soul to have shaken his hand. My thoughts are with those so close to him. Wishing you the best memories of a talented and fantastic man. With love and sympathy - Nina

My heart is broken. Its pieces go out to Rusty's family. Rusty's performances were a sole source of joy during a very dark time in my life. Rasta Mah-gee has infected me and I hope I never find the cure. Sha-la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la-la tee-dah! (now just think it...)

David Silver:
P.S. Nat, you don't know me, but I'm the guy who wrote the Taliban Can song. Your Dad told me you liked it and played it over and over. He called me to see if I would work with him on producing a CD of his comedy---I guess that was shortly before he got sick. It was not to be. I was there when you performed at Moonwork with your Dad a while back. I thought how lucky you were to have Rusty for a Dad. That will stay with you forever. I hope I can give as much of myself to my son, now five, as I'll bet your Dad gave to you. In countless ways, large and small, this is a monumental loss. My best to you and your Mom.
